Taught by award-winning film producer and director Mink Morrison, you'll learn about the history of independent comics, techniques for writing and illustrating comics, self-publishing and distribution, and the business side of creating independent comics. You'll also have the opportunity to learn from the legendary Yoshitaka Amano, who will join the class as a guest speaker. With his unique and imaginative style, Amano has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide and you'll be able to learn from him and develop your own unique style.

Class will be hosted on Zoom. Please download app before 1st day of class. Mic is required for critiques, webcam encourage not required (nobody want to speak to a blank screen)

  • This class is for intermediate level art students who want to continue developing their skills. Students are expected the know basics human anatomy 

  • Please note this is class is lecture heavy. You will received a lot of information. 

  • Expect 3-5 hours of homework per week with this class.

  • Week 1: Introduction to independent comics - This week will provide an overview of the history of independent comics, key figures and movements in the industry, and current trends in independent comics. Students will learn about the origins of independent comics, including the underground comic movement and the rise of alternative and self-published comics. They will also be introduced to contemporary independent comic creators and the different styles and genres in independent comics today.

  • Week 2: Writing for comics - This week, students will learn about the basics of scriptwriting for comics, including story structure, character development, and dialogue writing. They will also explore different script formats and learn about the writer's role in the comics creation process. Students will also be given the opportunity to write a short script, and receive feedback from the instructor.

  • Week 3: Illustration techniques - In this week, students will learn about the materials and techniques used in creating comic book art, including penciling, inking, and digital art. They will also learn about the different styles and techniques used in comic illustration, such as line art, brushwork, and digital coloring. Students will have the opportunity to create illustrations and receive feedback from the instructor.

  • Week 4: Design and Layout - In this week, students will learn about the principles of design and layout in comics, including panel design, pacing, and lettering. They will also learn the importance of creating a cohesive visual narrative and how to use different panel layouts to tell the story effectively.

  • Week 5: Self-publishing and distribution - This week will cover options for self-publishing, including print-on-demand and digital platforms, and strategies for reaching readers. Students will learn about the various self-publishing methods, such as creating a webcomic, Kickstarter, and other platforms. They will also learn about the different methods of distribution, such as conventions, bookstores, and online retailers.

  • Week 6: Guest Speaker Yoshitaka Amano- This week, Yoshitaka Amano will share his experience, insights on independent comics, and his unique and imaginative style. He will also discuss the process of creating his comic books and the challenges he has faced as an independent creator. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about his work.

  • Week 7: Marketing and promotion - In this week, students will learn about the importance of marketing and promotion in the independent comics industry, including developing a marketing plan, building an audience, and networking in the independent comics community. They will also learn about the different platforms and methods for promoting their comics, such as social media, conventions, and review websites.

  • Week 8: Final project and presentations - In this final week, students will present their final independent comic book projects and receive feedback from the class and instructor. They will have the opportunity to showcase their work and discuss their creative process. Additionally, the class will discuss the possibilities of getting their results published, the instructor will share their experiences and will provide guidance on how to submit and get their comics published, whether it be self-publishing or seeking out publishers. This will be a great opportunity for students to learn about the next steps after completing the course and to gain a real-world understanding of the independent comics industry.

Instructor: Mink Mirrision

Mink Morrison is a visionary film producer and director from Canada, living in California. Starting his journey in the early 2000s, he quickly took the film industry by storm and co-founded Morrision Films in 2008. Since then, he has been on a mission to create visually stunning and emotionally captivating films that tackle critical social issues.

His films are renowned for their character-driven stories, which bring to life relatable, diverse, and compelling characters that keep audiences engaged throughout the film. With his signature style, he seamlessly blends drama, humor, and a touch of the unexpected to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Mink's films have been recognized globally and have won several awards. He continues to push the boundaries of storytelling and constantly seeks new ways to captivate audiences with his work. His notable films include "The Last One," "Love is the way," and "The Road to Forgiveness." Instructor: Yoshitaka Amano (guest speaker)

Yoshitaka Amano is an incredible artist, designer, and illustrator from Japan who has hugely impacted the world of art and entertainment. He is best known for his work in the field of anime and video games, and his unique and imaginative style has captured the hearts of audiences around the world.

Starting his career in the 1960s, Amano has been involved in the creation of some of the most iconic anime and video game franchises of all time, including "Final Fantasy" and "Vampire Hunter D". His work is characterized by its use of vibrant colors, bold lines, and fantastical imagery that bring to life a world of wonder and imagination.

Throughout his career, Amano has also delved into other areas of art, including illustration, painting, and sculpture. His work has been featured in galleries and museums worldwide, and his illustrations have graced the covers of books, albums, and other media.

Now, students have a chance to learn from the master himself. Sho Murase was a talented and accomplished artist and designer known for her work as a cover artist and designer for Marvel Comics, where she has created some of the most memorable and visually stunning covers in the industry, her work is characterized by its use of bold and striking imagery, along with her unique style of character designs which are known to be highly detailed and expressive. She has worked on a wide range of titles, including "Black Widow", "Captain Marvel" and "X-men" and her cover art has been featured in comic book series such as "Deadpool", "X-23", and "Spider-Woman", her covers are praised for their powerful imagery, attention to detail and for capturing the essence of the characters and the story. She is a true master of her craft and a true inspiration for aspiring comic book artists and fans everywhere.

The Foundation

The Sho Murase Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the work of emerging artists in the comic book and entertainment industry. The foundation aims to honor the legacy of Sho Murase, a talented and accomplished artist and designer who has significantly impacted the world of comics and entertainment.
The foundation will provide financial and mentorship support to artists looking to break into the comic book industry. This will include funding for educational opportunities, equipment and materials, mentorship, and networking opportunities with established industry professionals.


The foundation will also promote the work of these emerging artists through exhibitions and events, giving them a platform to showcase their work to a wider audience.


In addition to supporting emerging artists, the foundation will also work to preserve and promote the legacy of Sho Murase and her contributions to the comic book and entertainment industry. Overall, the Sho Murase Foundation aims to be a valuable resource for emerging artists looking to make a name for themselves in the comic book and entertainment industry while preserving and promoting the legacy of a true master of her craft.
