Creating Unique Visual Aesthetics:
Art Direction and Style Development with Hong Ly

The course will begin with an overview of art direction and visual style development, including examining different art styles and techniques used in games, animation, and merchandise design. You will then delve into developing your unique visual aesthetic, including defining your creative vision, establishing a visual language, and creating a visual style guide.

Class will be hosted on Zoom. Please download app before 1st day of class. Mic is required for critiques, webcam encourage, not required (nobody want to speak to a blank screen)

Shared Google Drive Folder for Student Feedback

Demos will be in Adobe Photoshop. Students are free to choose their own media such as Procreate or traditional media.

  • This class is for intermediate level art students who want to continue developing their skills. Students are expected the know basics human anatomy 

  • Expect 3-5 hours of homework per week with this class.

Instructor: Hong Ly

Hong Ly, Concept Artist/Art Director with more than 20 years of experience in the industry. He has worked as a concept artist at Naughty Dog, the game development studio behind hits like The Last of Us and the Uncharted series, and Riot Games, the Los Angeles-based game development studio behind the eSports phenomenon League of Legends. He has also worked on a wide range of game projects, from Riot's Wild Rift, Lineage, The Incredibles, Spongebob Squarepants, Indiana Jones, Fallout, and several other shipping titles. Founder and creative director of Captive Style, LLC, where he produced characters for clients, including Samsung’s Everland theme park in South Korea.

He is also an instructor at Art Center College of Design, ranked among the top graduate design programs in the United States, Otis College of Art and Design, and taught at Gnomon School of VFX. Launched the site www.CharacterDesigns.com a free resource for artists
